I choose to make no judgement. At the time of her marriage, many women chose to keep their maiden names as a way of staking their independence. That's why so many people had hyphenated names, too.

I can’t help but notice she chose to keep the last name of her unsupportive father who tried to dissuade her from persuing her art, rather than take the last name of her husband (and her daughter’s). For someone whose beliefs and artwork is so based on the “connection” of all things, it seems like she’s deliberately chosen to reject the connection she has to her actual family.
